Enterprise India Exhibition, Bratislava (September 27 to October 3, 2005)
A fair of Indian products of the Small & Medium Enterprises – “Enterprise India Exhibition” - was organised at Exhibition and Convention Centre, Incheba, Bratislava by the Embassy in association with Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and Ministry of Small Scale Industries of the Government of India from September 27 to October 3, 2005. The Exhibition showcased products of 35 Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) of India from various sectors, like Textiles & Readymade Garments, Cosmetics, Health care Products, Jewellery, Home Furnishings, Furniture, Handicrafts, Brassware, Leather Products, Sports Goods and Handloom. The Exhibition was organised keeping with a threefold emphasis on the need for a long-term commitment for doing business with Slovakia, a spirit of give and take in multilateral trade issues; and a more liberal framework for movement of people across borders to transact business. It was inaugurated by Mr. Martin Hrivik, Secretary General, Slovak Chamber of Commerce & Industry in the presence of Mr. M.K. Lokesh, Ambassador of India, Mr. Gurpal Singh, Deputy Director General, CII, RNDr. Jozef Horvath, General Director, Ministry of Economy, Mr. Igor Junas, Chairman, Slovak Chamber of Commerce & Industry (Bratislava Regional Chamber); and Ing. Marian Tomasik, Director, Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The Exhibition was visited by a large number of visitors including prospective business partners. It generated a lot of interest among the common public, as it was first ever such event pertaining to Indian organised in Slovakia since the establishment of Indian Diplomatic Mission in Bratislava in 1995. It provided an opportunity to the participating Indian Enterprises to present their products directly to the Slovak people and for the Slovak businessmen to see the products from India. The bilateral trade between India and Slovakia, though low in absolute terms, is steadily increasing from around US$ 70 million in 2003 to US$113 million in the year 2004. In the first seven months of the current year, the bilateral trade has already reached to US$74 million.
The SME sector plays a vital role in the growth of India. Numbering over 3.5 million, SMEs contribute almost 40% of the gross industrial value added in the Indian economy. SMEs in India create largest employment opportunities for the populace, next only to Agriculture. SMEs also play a major role in India's present export performance, with about half of the Indian Exports being contributed by them. Export has been mostly fuelled by the performance of garments, leather and gems and jewellery units from this sector. The product groups where the SMEs dominate in exports are sports goods, readymade garments, woollen garments and knitwear, plastic products, processed food and leather products. The major export markets for SMEs include US, EU and Japan.
